Legendary Ross Design
Laid out on a 300-acre parcel outside Philadelphia by prolific Scottish architect and professional golfer Donald Ross, Aronimink’s 18-hole routing dates to 1926. Ross is universally regarded as one of golf’s greatest designers, and his resume backs that fact up: He is credited with designing more than 400 courses across the United States and Canada throughout his storied career.
Aronimink has seen alterations and updates over the years, but it remains true to Ross’s original design. Offering challenging play to players of all skill levels, Aronimink’s greens, fairways, and hazards remain as Ross intended.
In & Out of the Sink
Ross’s ingenious routing takes advantage of a large bowl-shaped depression on the grounds, arranging holes around, into, and out of “the sink.” With some holes running downhill into the sink, and others running uphill out of it, players must navigate clusters of expertly placed bunkers designed to trick the eye.
Some of the most challenging holes at Aronimink are positioned along the rim of The Sink—6, 7, and 15 (all par 4), and 16 (par 5)—with fairways that feature unexpected side slopes designed to pull your shot into the rough.
The Land of Champions
Championship golf runs in the blood at Aronimink. Gary Player won the 1962 PGA Championship on the course, and the 1977 U.S. Amateur was won by John Fought there, as well. A series of championships followed, including the 2003 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, the 2010 AT&T National, the BMW Championship in 2018, and the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship (which was won by Sei Young Kim).

What’s at Stake in 2026
With a 64-year absence since the last PGA Championship in Newtown Square, the 2026 PGA Championship promises to bring thrilling professional stroke play to Aronimink just as the USA celebrates the 250th anniversary of its founding in nearby Philadelphia.
The world’s best golfers will vie for custody of the Wanamaker Trophy, along with a hefty purse and worldwide bragging rights. Also at stake are exemptions to play in the other three majors and The Players Championship for the next five years, along with lifetime eligibility for the PGA Championship and a five-year exemption to play on the PGA Tour and a seven-year membership on the DP World Tour.
