Georgia golf phenom Mason Howell chalks up a decisive win at the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship
A career-making moment at The Olympic Club
Mason Howell, H&B ambassador and Georgia high school senior, chalked up a decisive 7-up victory in Sunday’s final 36-hole match to win the 125th United States Amateur Championship at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
This marks another huge waypoint on a terrific summer campaign for the 18-year-old student from Brookwood School in Thomasville, Georgia, including winning the Georgia High School Individual Stroke Play State Championship, along with medaling at the U.S. Junior Am and qualifying for the U.S. Open in June. After Sunday’s match wrapped up, the future UGA Bulldog found himself the third-youngest player to lift the Havemeyer Trophy, pushing past Tiger Woods for the honor.
Working his way up through the ranks
Entering this weekend’s championship as a 63rd seed, Mason had his work cut out for him to remain in contention. By Sunday’s final match, though, Mason moved past a slow start to open an ever-growing lead over 19-year-old Jackson Herrington from Dickson, Tennessee. Mason’s eagle on Olympic’s par-4 seventh hole signaled a shift in the day’s momentum, with Mason building his lead from there on out, ultimately cruising to a 7 and 6 win.
Doors are opening for Howell
The win at U.S. Amateur earns Mason exemptions to play in the 2026 Masters and the 2026 U.S. Open, along with a slot on the 2025 USA Walker Cup team at Cypress Point and a possible invitation to the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
Congratulations Mason from all of us at Holderness & Bourne—we’re glad you're on our team!
