The Ryder Cup stands alone in the world of golf. No other event in golf ignites international passion quite like the Cup—since 1927, this competition, held every other year between U.S. and European teams, has taken place in venues on alternating sides of the Atlantic. Ninety-eight years after that first match, the 2025 Ryder Cup is heading for an infamously challenging public park course on Long Island.
The Ryder Cup’s Journey
From its beginnings as a friendly contest between the USA and England, the Ryder Cup has grown to become the world’s premier transatlantic showdown, pitting teams from the US and Europe against each other, laying it all on the line for country and camaraderie (as well as a handsome trophy).
The first Ryder Cup was held at the prestigious Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts—the highly regarded club had hosted the U.S. Open just two years before, in 1925—with the U.S. team chalking up a decisive win after a morning of foursomes matches and an afternoon of singles matches.
