The 2025 U.S. Open makes its exciting return to Pittsburgh’s Oakmont Country Club June 12-15. The club is consistently ranked in Golf Digest’s top five courses in America, thanks to the course’s unique Henry Clay Fownes design, dating back more than a century.
Fast-forward 122 years, and the U.S. Open 2025 is poised to give the field of 156 of the world’s best a run for their money. The par 70 championship course, with its fast, undulating greens and thick rough, is regarded as one of the most challenging in the country, but don’t let the lack of water hazards fool you. There’s plenty of excitement waiting at Oakmont, including the 100-yard-long Church Pew bunker on hole #3 (par 4), the Sahara hole #8 (par 3), and the Reverse Redan hole #16 (par 3). Hole #17 will also be a fun one to watch, with most players taking out their driving irons on this reachable par 4.

Commemorating the 2025 U.S. Open in Pittsburgh
Designed more than 120 years ago, the championship course at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA, has a well-earned reputation for being one of America’s most difficult courses to play. Originally employed as farmland, the landscape was transformed in 1903 by local golf enthusiast Henry Fownes with the help of 150 men into a challenging links-style course. Henry’s vision for the course was distinctive and unique—so much so that Oakmont was the only golf course he would design in his lifetime.
Peppered throughout Oakmont’s storied history, you’ll find a slew of golf championships. The club already held the record for having hosted the U.S. Open more times than any other course in the country (nine, as of 2016); the 2025 U.S. Open marks the 10th Open at Oakmont. OCC has also hosted three PGA Championships, six U.S. Amateurs, three NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships, as well as a pair of U.S. Women’s Opens.
